Available here is an exceptionally cool ’70s Les Paul Deluxe with quite the history! Believed to be owned and stage-played by the one and only Pete Townshend, this guitar was sold to the world-famous Charlie Chandler’s by Pete’s guitar tech Alan Rogan in the ’90s. Unfortunately, no provenance is presented with the guitar to prove Pete owned the guitar, but there are tell-tale signs – firstly, the neck. While this is a Les Paul Deluxe model, the guitar features what’s believed to be a Les Paul Custom neck, which is unique and something Gibson would have done as an artist sample guitar. Secondly, when the previous owner purchased this Les Paul in the ’90s, it was fitted with a DiMarzio humbucker in the bridge position – again, something Pete loved in his guitars throughout the ’70s. Since then, the original mini humbuckers have been re-installed, and the body routing for the bridge pickup is visible. The serial number is extremely faint but still partially reads ‘3932’. The frets, and electrics are all original with the pots dating to 1979, and the only changes in hardware appear to be a new set of Kluson tuners and a gold jack plate. The overall condition of the guitar is very good for the age with no breaks and plenty of life remaining in the frets, and the original Cherry Sunburst finish still prominent. This Les Paul weighs 9lbs 12oz.
